In a stunning flashback to the Toyota recalls of 2010, a driver at a car wash vacuumed their floor mat only to accidentally pin their pedal underneath it when they went to back out of their spot. This resulted in a crash with minor injuries to another driver when the speeding truck crushed their car in a wash bay .
So remember when all this went down with the toyota floor mats that got recalled back in 2010 and the judgement came down from the go vernment that *all* vehicles need to be equipped with accelerator override via brake pedal? How did that not happen here? Why is it a “Runaway truck” and not an “Inattentive driver”?

Same reason we call crashes “accidents”, our society is too PC to tell people they fucked up.

It’s depressing how often these come on JRITS. Though thankfully they mostly seem to be reported as “ high-idle” rather than “crashed into stuff”, maybe because of that brake override change.
In any event, have a car wash crash:

Wait.... If the accelerator pedal was floored via the mat, how did the driver now notice a redlining engine before slipping it into reverse? Like... That... What?

My guess is the mat was on the pedal, but not enough to be noticed right away, but the gentle pressure on the pedal when he went to back out let the weight of the mat keep it pressed. I still think he didn’t even try the brake pedal though. I don’t think there’s a universe where the weight of the mat alone can keep that gas pedal pinned to the floor.

I love that car that almost stops and then just drives off like everything is normal.

It’s called... I can’t afford this truck any more and need to get rid of it through insurance .

I wouldn’t be surprised, it did look like a really new truck

I think these trucks have a neutral rev limit. She probably wondered why the engine was a little loud then sent it anyway. lol

I am not at all surprised that happened. At a recent product test, we had a customer leave it in drive, bump into the car in front, then leave it in reverse, bash the car behind, then on their way out, they exited through the entrance lane and sideswiped someone about to enter the parking lot. It was a comedy of bad driving and we had to call the cops since she ran off.

Ugh, brakes. Hit the brakes. Hard. How is this not an automatic reaction to a vehicle moving unexpectedly? Especially with an automatic transmission, your foot is already on the brake pedal as you shift into reverse.

Your guess is as good as mine. I know they implemented brake override capabilities by 2014 since my Fiesta ST couldn’t accelerate while the brake pedal was being pressed. It would immediately kill throttle input and make the car come to a stop. And I highly doubt that the new trucks have a cable operated throttle.

Bummer for left foot braking enthusiasts everywhere, although I’m sure one could override that feature somehow. In any case, I’m sure it was just panic and not logic here. It just amazes me that someone with any experience doesn’t stand on the brake pedal by default in such a situation.
